Why an Emergency Fund Should Be Part of Your Career Plan
Why an Emergency Fund Should Be Part of Your Career Plan As you progressin your career, finding a new job can become harder and harder. One of the big reasons for this has to do with salary. When you first start working, you are generally open to just about any job and will happily take a tiny paycheck. However, as you rise through the ranks of your industry, your salary requirements will evolve. One challenging situation that many job seekers face is when they want to leave a job but are financially unable to. In general, one of two scenarios is preventing the job seeker from leaving They are either living right up to their means and spending every dollar they make each month, or they do not have a safety net in the form of an emergency kenntniserlangung.A job seeker with no emergency fund who needs every dollar to pay their basic bills feels trapped. Its even worse if the job seeker is being treated poorly at work They cant financially afford to leave, butthey cant emotionally afford to stay.Dont Get Trapped Start an Emergency FundTo protect yourself from gettingtrapped in a scenario like the one described above, do two things.First, scale back your fixed expenses if possible. Then, take the extra money youre saving each month and put it into a savings account. That account will serve as your emergency fund. Ideally, your emergency fund should carry you through six months of living expenses. I recommend keeping your emergency fund in a savings account because itwill be protected from market fluctuations that way.Creating an emergency fund takes time and dedication. Its not something you can do overnight, and its not easy. But if you feel stuck in a bad work situation, think about how much differently you might feel if you knew you had six months of living expenses in an account just in case. The benefits of an emergency fund cant be overstressed. Having a backup plan gives you room to breathe and the power to walk away from jobs ( if necessary) without having to worry about how youll pay rent.Along these same lines, when you land a new job that pays more, dont immediately jump to increase your fixed monthly expenses. A new house or car may be tempting, but give yourself a option to decide that you really like your new job first and that the company really likes you. The last thing you want is to lose that job and be stuck with living expenses that reflect your lost income. The bottom line is this. Things can (and will) go wrong at work. You may get a bad boss. Your company may go through layoffs. But if you manage your finances carefully, youll give yourself an out. And, in the end, youll create both breathing room andprofessional freedom.A version of this article originally appeared in theMemphis Daily News.Angela Copeland is a career coach and CEO at her firm,Copeland Coaching.

Second Annual Emerging Technology Awards Recognize Technologic... Second Annual Emerging Technology Awards Recognize Technologic... Second Annual Emerging Technology Awards Recognize Technological AdvancesFive ascending technologies and the innovators behind them were recently named as the winners of Mechanical Engineering magazines 2018 Emerging Technology Awards. The winners were announced at the IMECE keynote session earlier this month in Pittsburgh, Pa., and are highlighted in both this months issue of Mechanical Engineering and on ASME.org.Launched last year, the Emerging Technology Awards recognize an innovator in each of ASMEs five core technology areas clean energy, bioengineering, robotics, manufacturing and pressure technology. The winner of the Emerging Technology Award this year in the clean energy area was Vincent Schellings of GE Renewable Energy for developing the worlds largest wind turbine, the Haliade-X, which is capable of generating 12 megawatts of electric power. The award for bioengineering went to Alex Kipman of Microsoft for the wearable holographic computer HoloLens, a mixed reality headset that blends computer-generated images with the real-world view of the user. RoboKind and its founder Richard Margolin were named the winners of the Emerging Technology Award for robotics for developing the Milo, a lower-cost robot that is being used to help teach children with autism. The award in the manufacturing category went to Airbus Emerging Technologies and Concept Groups Bastian Schfer, for creating the 3D-printed partition for separating the seating and kche im flugzeug oder zug areas on the Airbus A320. The Emerging Technology Award in the fifth area, pressure technology, was given to Boris Liberman of Israels IDE Technologies for developing an energy-efficient process for the reverse osmosis desalination of seawater. In his essay that introduces the Emerging Technology Awards section of Mechanical Engineering this month, ASME Executive D irector Tom Costabile writes, The technologies honored this year are incredibly diverse. They run the gamut from being as gigantic as a skyscraper to being intimate enough to place on your head. One connects with hard-to-reach children one-on-one, while another is designed to provide for entire cities. And yet another reimagines a hidden component, finding a way to manufacture it, so that it weighs much less without giving up any of its necessary strength. To read more of Costabiles essay or to read ME magazine articles and watch video clips honoring the five Emerging Technology Award winners visit 2018 emerging technology awards.

How to Set New Year#8217;s Career Resolutions That You#8217;ll Actually Keep
How to Set New Year8217s Career Resolutions That You8217ll Actually Keep How to Set New Year8217s Career Resolutions That You8217ll Actually Keep However, I thought Id take a slightly different perspective and look at ways of creating New Yearscareer resolutions that well actually stick to, because most of us fail miserably in this regard, according to research by the University of Scranton. The study found that although 45 percent of people make resolutions, just 8 percent of us are successful in achieving our resolutions. Twenty-five percentof New Years resolutions dont last a week, and 36 percent of them are blown within one month. Now, this doesnt mean that we should abandon New Years resolutionsthe study showed that people who explicitly make resolutions are 10 times more likely to reach their goals than those folks who dont make resolutions. This means that, if done well, the New Years resolutionprocess can be an effective motivational and personal/career development tool. So, what can be done to help youplatzdeckchen New Years careerresolutions that you are actually going to keep? Ive set out some tips below1. Set SMART GoalsThe best way to set goals is by using the SMART method, which means making sure that your goals are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-bounded. Getting out of a dead-end job is too vague a goal and can easily be brushed under the carpet. Instead, say something like Be in a new, fulfilling, job/career within six months.Research from Quirkology into New Years resolutions supports this approach, as it shows people (men in particular) were more likely to succeed in achieving their goals if they set SMART goals.2. If Necessary, Break Your Resolution Down into Sub-GoalsOf course, a resolution like getting out of a dead-end job may require the achievement of several sub-goals ,such as identifying suitable careers, identifying skill gaps, addressing skill gaps, and applying to new jobs. So,Id recommend breaking down broader New Years resolutions into 2-4easily memorizedSMART goals to help give you momentum.3. Tell Others about Your ResolutionThe Quirkology study found that women in particular were more successful in achieving New Years resolutions when they told their friends and family and received ongoing encouragement. So, female job seekers especially might want to tell others about their New Years career resolutions to increase their chances of achieving them.4. Reward Yourself for Achieving GoalsThe Quirkology study also found that men in particular had more success in achieving goals when they focused on the potential rewards of reaching their goals. A carrot works better than a stick, and so Id recommend that male job seekers in particular take time to identify the specific benefits that will come from achieving their resolutions and any sub-goals, as mentioned in tip No. 2 for motivational effect. I would go as far to add rewards for yourself tothe plan, too, such as a big steak or a night o ut. Use whatever you consider a treat to incentivize you to hit those goals and sub-goals.And finally, try not to make too many New Years resolutions, as you can become overwhelmed and lose focus and motivation, increasingly the likelihood of failing to meet your objective. Also, becausea third of people break their resolutionsin the first month, set an immovable goal inthe first and second month of the year, such as signing up for a relevant training course, attendinga specific career seminar, or applying for a job.Anyway, Id love to hear what tips and tools you use to help yourself set and achieve your New Years career resolutions

3 Reasons to Work in Sales for a Tech Startup
3 Reasons to Work in Sales for a Tech Startup 3 Reasons to Work in Sales for a Tech Startup To me, its no different from what I saw back in the late 90s and early 2000s, in terms of the funding, the companies, and the competition for talent, Camplejohn says. That just makes everything across the board difficult.According to AngelList, there are currently 18,403 departureups in Silicon Valley, and a very good chunk of those startups are in the tech world. Because of the sheer number of startups all jostling for the same space as well as the continuing recovery of the U.S. economy competition for talent in Silicon Valley is fierce. Its a candidates market today, Camplejohn says. Most technology positions are hard to fill in general, andespecially in Silicon Valley. But its elend just the laptop-wielding, hoodie-clad techies that companies are vying for. As it turns out, tech startups are having a particularly hard time finding talent to fill their technical abverkauf and sales manage ment positions. According to a report issued last year by the Harvard Business Review, Burning Glass, and Accenture, these roles are among the hardest to fill not only in Silicon Valley, but across the U.S.All of this is to say that there are plenty of tech startups looking for salespeople out there. Are you a fresh college grad looking to start your career? An experienced salesperson in need of a new challenge? A mid-career worker looking to make a change? Here are Camplejohns three reasons why you may want to think about pursuing a sales role at a tech startup.1. Sales Is a Great Place to Start Your Career in TechIf youre a young worker who wants to start a career in tech, Camplejohn says taking a sales role is the best way to dive into the world.Even if you dont want to stay in sales all your life maybe you want to move into the programming side of things or start your own tech company someday sales gives you what Camplejohn calls a front-row seat into what customers are looking for.Today, sales is not about just wracking up a bunch of transactions, Camplejohn says. Its really about actingas a trusted advisor to companies, customers, and prospects. In technical sales especially, potential buyers often come to the table with a lot of research under their belts. They arent looking for sales pitches theyre looking for strategic partners who can help them decipher all the information they have on hand.Becausetechnical salespeople get to act as strategic advisors, rather than pitchmen, they really get a feel for who the customers are in the tech world and what the market looks like.I think that a technical sales role really puts somebody in touch with real customer problems and real customer pains, Camplejohn says. Understanding that is key for any career in tech.2. Technical Sales Give You a Chance to Stretch Your Intellectual MusclesYou can pick up important sales techniques, like cold-calling and followup, from pretty much any sales role. According to Cample john, however, technical sales offers mora than just a chance to sharpen your sales chops.Generally, in a technical sales role, youre going to have a lot more intellectual challenges, and youll get to work with some really smart people, Camplejohn says.Because of the nature of technical sales learning about specific and sometimes complicated products, acting as a trusted advisor to customers the role can really challenge employees to become more creative and to think outside the box more often.Plus, Camplejohn says, selling tech can really help youbuild a betterunderstanding of customers. Knowing what customers want and how to work with themarekey components of pretty much any role in the tech world. Even the software engineers who never speak directly with customers need to know about the people for whom they are building their products.3.Technical Sales Offers an Opportunity for Major Professional GrowthIf you join the sales team at a quickly growing tech startup, youll of course have the potential to earn some serious commission checks probably more commission than you would earn at an established company in the later stages of its existence. But in a technical sales role, your bank accounts not the only thing that will grow.If you really have the initiative, you can quickly advance in your career at a tech startup, Camplejohn says, You have the opportunity to come in, volunteer to take a lot of responsibility, and learn a lot in a very compressed period of time.Technical sales roles at startups can offer workers at all stages of their livesthe chance to learn valuable skills that will serve them well no matter where their careers take them. With so many opportunities out there, job seekers may want to think about finding a role in technical sales. At least for now.

3 things to remember about fear and how to use it to drive success
3 things to remember about fear and how to use it to drive success3 things to remember about fear and how to use it to drive successEleanor Roosevelt once said, Do one thing every day that scares you.We all have fear. None of us are so lucky to be entirely immune to it. Some choose to be consumed by their fears, while others choose to embrace them, befriend them, and harness them to fuel their dreams. The difference between the two is the former end up living an incomplete life of guilt and unhappiness, while the latter emerge stronger, smarter, and more likely to be on the path to success.Fear can paralyze you or help you take that leap forward. After more than 25 years as an entrepreneur, I can tell you that there is only one fear worth having - that you have only today, and only today counts. And you have to maximize today.A few years ago, I was on a family holiday at the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. We took a boat to the reef on a beautiful Australian summer day. bedrngnis a single ship was in sight. The boat pulled up over a segment of the reef that was barely below the waterline. We jumped into the lovely, warm blue water with our snorkeling gear to enjoy the incredible spectacle that lay hidden underneath. As I was snorkeling and floating along the warm current, suddenly something that looked like a line appeared below me and the warm water turned chillingly cold. The line was the water ridge that plummeted from the safety of the reef into the darkness of the sea. The beautiful sight below me suddenly went pitch black. I realized that I had gone over the reef into the icy ocean and there was a real chance the strong current could carry me away or dump me into the path of a shark.Fear overtook my entire being for a moment, and then survival instinct kicked in. I yanked my head out of the water and saw the reef was barely ten feet away. I started swimming back as fast as I could, probably the fastest I have ever in my life. Before I knew it, I was back in the beauty and comfort of the reef, but for about twenty numbing seconds, I had gone over to the dark side of Mother Nature and she was scaryOne moment I was in a comfortable, warm, and beautiful place without a care and the next moment, I was in a dark, cold abyss. That incident was a stark reminder of how close we all are to the line and how closely this line follows us for all of our lives.Sometimes, we all need a little fear to remind us of what is truly important. There are three things we must remember about fear.1. Fear is excitement in disguiseFear is just excitement in need of an attitudeadjustment. A Keepers TruthLets take the example of skydiving. The idea of stepping off a plane at 14,000 feet altitude into nothingness evokes two completely different responses in two people.Jill is thrilled and excited about flying through the sky like a bird, feeling the wind on her face. Jack is paralyzed by fear, imagining worst-case scenarios. In Jill, the adventurous nature lying dormant in all of us awakens to the raw, unrestrained elixir of fear and it gives her an incredible high when she embraces it.But for Jack, just the thought of doing something outside of his comfort zone strikes unimaginable terror in his heart. So whether you experience fear or excitement really just depends on the lens you choose to look through at the world. It comes down to a choice.Interestingly, young children are the least affected by fear of unknown. Most young kids are far more adventurous and fearless than many adults. As we get older, life has a way of creating layer upon layer of fear in our subconscious. Adulthood clouds our lens with self-doubt and other negative messages we see and hear every day.So clean your lens and change your focus from fear to excitement. This takes practice, so start small and work up to the heavy lifting.2.What doesnt paralyze you, energizes youThis is my take on the old adage - What doesnt kill you, makes you stronger. My experience tells me th at fear is an unwelcome visitor in our life only when we are pursuing something we really want. Thats usually a sign we are on the right trackThink about all the times you were overcome by fear and theres a good chance you will notice a pattern. Most likely it was just as you were about to embark on a major transition in your life, or were venturing into something completely new and unknown. This is completely normal. In fact, I would go so far as to say, if you are not afraid, you should perhaps revisit your decision. In a sense, fear shows us the way. It reveals something we need to work on. What are you going do with it? Do you allow it to paralyze you, or guide you? Allow your fear to be an energizing force that propels you forward. Let it uncover what you need to doand then go do it.3. Fear is a great motivator for growthAt an evolutionary level, it was a keen sense of fear during the time of the caveman that effectively helped keep humans out of danger. But now that life has ev olved and we no are longer in survival mode, that sense of fear hasnt really gone away. It just manifested into something else. We are now afraid of change, uncertainty, and unfamiliar things.Living in this type of fear leaves you stuckverzierung in one place forever, in an illusory comfort zone that is akin to a childs security blanket. We all have one and carry it around just as Linus does in thePeanutscartoons. Security blankets are like substitute mothers. They give comfort and provide feelings of safety and security, much as our mothers would do for us.But, there comes a time when we must leave the childhood nest and with it, the security blanket.Humans are wired for familiarity and its just easy to stick to the familiar. But unless you learn to let go of that security blanket, you will never know what lies on the other side of fear. A life of predictability and familiarity is not a life of growth.Leaning into fear is hard to do because it makes us vulnerable. When you take tha t leap, sometimes you fly, but sometimes you crash and burn. In both cases, you are guaranteed to end up in a new place. In summary, your life expands as your courage and willingness to grow expands. Lean into your fear today by taking small steps, and allow it to widen your world and guide you on your path to success.Vijay Eswaran is a successful entrepreneur, motivational speaker, and philanthropist and the author of the best-selling bookIn the Sphere of Silence. Career Lessons to Learn from the 2014 Baseball Playoffs
Career Lessons to Learn from the 2014 Baseball PlayoffsCareer Lessons to Learn from the 2014 Baseball PlayoffsThe Major League Baseball playoffs are underway, and they have something to offer everyone who works for a living important career lessons. Here are four things we can all take away from the Major League Baseball postseason.1. Even the best have bad daysClayton Kershaw is considered the best pitcher in baseball. But in his first start of the 2014 postseason Kershaw saw the St. Louis Cardinals do the unthinkable they delivered one of the worst defeats of his career. After the game, Kershaw couldnt offer answers. He got another shot at the Cardinals and needed to bring his A-game to win. He didnt. The Dodgers lost the series.Although we all have to go out and give it our all, from time to time well landsee even the best effort doesnt equal a victory. But what makes champions is the ability to bounce back and try to win the next chance they get. Every time the manager hands us th e ball, we need to try to win, too.Play to win. If you lose, pick yourself up and try harder the next time.2. The window for success closesThe Detroit Tigers have been a great team for a few years. But the World Series crown has eluded them. Although they have talent they have not been able to put up the ansturms to win the big games, even with the best hitter on the planet on their team. After a devastating sweep at the hands of the Baltimore Orioles this year, the Tigers will have to go back to the drawing board and figure out a way to win next year. When you have the opportunity to win, you have to take it up a notch and give it everything you can. If you dont youre stuck with what-ifs, the most devastating questions you can ask, especially if you know that the opportunity was there. When you have the opportunity, strike.3. Yelling never helpsIn the 10th inning of Game 2 between the San Francisco Giants and the Washington Nationals, the Nationals second baseman didnt agree with two -strike calls that ultimately led to him striking out. When he was called out he proceeded to argue with the umpire, eventually being ejected from the game. When something happens that makes us angry, sad, disappointed, etc., the worst thing that we can do is let our emotions get the best of us. We have to maintain our cool and stick with it. When you let your emotions take over, you run the risk of offending or alienating people and losing possible career connections.Dont lose yourself to emotion and alienate yourself from other professionals.
